The process of God is unfathomable. When I was in my 20s I was sure I knew the purpose God had for my life. As I journeyed through life, I was buffeted by the process until I lost everything – friends, status, wealth, vision, my sense of mission, and even sight of my purpose.
Just last year someone asked me what my purpose was and all I could say to him was, “I thought I knew what it was, but now I can’t say that I do.” That is what happens when you are pulled out of Potiphar’s house, and tossed into the dungeon. The dreams of the Sun, Moon, and Stars bowing to you seem distant and laughable. You don’t know if they were real or a mirage.
You go about your business serving in the dungeon. The people receive your ministry with joy, but have no idea how lost you feel. You pray for doors to open for them, and they swing right open. The Pharaoh’s cupbearer is freed, reinstated to his position, and promptly forgets about you.
Day after day you pace the dungeon floors, waiting for a word from the cupbearer. Hoping he has spoken to the Pharaoh about you. But no. Out of mind was out of sight. Hope turns to hope deferred, and your heart is sick from waiting. Still you keep ministering to others while in the dungeon. Purpose unknown. Heart sick. Hope, though deferred, remains. “The Lord will not leave me here forever. One day he shall bring me out.”
7 years later (yes, I have been in this dungeon that long), the Lord pronounces one word over you: PROMOTION! An angel of the Lord appears in the heavenlies with a trumpet. He blows a long blast on it to announce your change of season. Just like that, Pharaoh sends for you. Take a bath, shave, change your clothes, the King has need of you! Up, up, up they take you, out of the dungeon and into the light! Then they usher you into the presence of the King of kings and the Lord of lords.
There he sits on the throne of grace. Surrounded by the light of his glory. Kindness and love is the atmosphere of his presence. You are conscious that you are standing in the presence of immense majesty. Reverence, the fear of God, grips your heart. He looks at you standing there at the entrance of the throne room of the Most High. His eyes light up with pleasure. The King of the Universe is delighted to see you.
He doesn’t say a word, but the words are loud and clear in your spirit. “Well done, thou good and faithful servant!” Those words erase all the pain of the years you have been in the process. Tears well up in your eyes and run down your face.
His right arm moves. He extends his scepter to you. You walk towards the throne of God boldly. You are accepted in the beloved. You kneel before his throne, extend you hand, and touch the tip of his scepter. Then you bow down and worship him. Just like that, your season in the dungeon is over. It’s time for you to be revealed. It’s time to fulfill the purpose for which he called you.
