If you are not studying the word of God on a daily basis, chances are that you are not hearing God on a daily basis. Most of the time God speaks through his word! Most people imagine that hearing God is a mystical experience, but most days it is simply by reading the word. Even when God speaks to you in your heart, the most common way that he does that is by speaking scripture into your spirit. This means that you need to be in the word on a daily basis. There is no two ways about it.
If you have been struggling with reading the word, or are just starting out in the faith, I recommend that you start with small, easy books. Starting with the book of Daniel, Ezekiel, or Revelation will really throw you off. And if you go with Leviticus and Numbers you will likely fall asleep in the process. Start with one of the gospels, or one of the epistles. Then commit to reading just 1 chapter every day, and keep doing that until it becomes second nature.
At this juncture, unless the Holy Spirit is leading you to do so, I do not recommend reading through the Bible in one year or any such program. Chances are that you will be speed reading and not internalizing much of what you are reading. This is something that I would recommend much later on in your walk of faith. For now read one passage at a time, meditating on it, taking notes, and praying over that word.
Your quiet time should plant seeds of the word in your heart that you can bring back to mind later and chew over as you go about your day. Meditation on the word tends to bring illumination or revelation.
